Not a bug, behaving as designed.  (Arguably violating the principle of 
least surprise...)

Thanks for the pointer.  I just wish that the Gtk+ API docs had this
kind of useful information.

this is a pretty common problem/issue. if you'd like you can log a doc
bug against gtk+ for it suggesting clairification.
