if you can't wait check out the stable-1-040 (or something like that) branch
from sf anoncvs. there's probably going to be one (hopfully not more) beta
rels before final 1.040 rel. it's going out with the gnome-language-bindings
release set so it would have to be rel'd by then.

all of the recent unstable/beta releases have the 2.4 support in them, the
differences between them and 1.040 will be small.
