mostly because they were the only way in the previous versions of perl, and
there's a lot of finger and brain memory for that... and i didn't discover the
ansi-style XS declarations until halfway through this project.
and also the formatting on the k&r style doesn't get too wide to read in
non-fullscreen editor windows. (i like to keep three 80-char-wide columns of
text on my screen in gvim ;-)
we're not compatible with perl < 5.8.0 because of text issues, so it's safe to
use the new style whereever you want. some features, like the OUTLIST stuff,
only work reliably in the ansi-style anyway.
