One possible cause for the plug/socket test to fail is if you run it
with another perl binary than the system default one. The test does a
fork/exec, and the exec:ed binary is simply specified as "perl", which
will be resolved using your $PATH as usual. If that's not the same
perl binary as is running the test, wonkiness may ensue.

good spot, i thought of that a few mins after i sent the message, but figured
it wasn't worth me resending to correct myself. made sure that it was true and
sure enough it was. have a patch to submit here for that test in a little
while (as soon as sourceforge devel cvs is responding). you'll get credit for
spotting it.
