RH8.0 & GNOME Applets?

I've had a rough time trying to get Gtk-Perl, GNOME, and Applets
working on Red Hat 8.0.

I'm trying to get the example from
http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2001/03/27/gnome.html
working, both because I want that specific functionality, and more
importantly, because it's a good template for several other things I
want to do.

But no luck yet :-(.

I've been through what seems like a dozen RPMs, trying to get it
going, including

gnome-core-devel-1.4.1-1.ximian.4.i386.rpm
gtkglarea-1.2.2-13.i386.rpm
Gtk-Perl-0.7008-25.i386.rpm
Gtk-Perl-0.7008-25.src.rpm
Gtk-Perl-0.7008-ximian.3.i386.rpm
gal-devel-0.21-2.i386.rpm

Gtk-Perl-0.7008-25.i386.rpm almost worked; "use Gnome" didn't fail,
but "init Gnome::Panel::AppletWidget does.

[root localhost bin]# ./ping_gateway.pl
Can't locate object method "init" via package "Gnome::Panel::AppletWidge
t" (perhaps you forgot to load "Gnome::Panel::AppletWidget"?) at
