So Gtk2-Perl will require Perl 5.8.0 or higher? I hope this is only
temporary because that will greatly hinder my migration to it. There are
a lot of machines out there still at 5.6.x and they won't upgrade their
Linux distro just to run my app.

I will require ExtUtils::MakeMaker version 6.0 or newer
which is installable from CPAN. 6.0.5 is the latest, 6.0.3
is distributed with perl 5.8.0
On the other hand perl version prior to 5.8.0 is not
very good at handling Unicode and text in gtk+ 2.x is all
unicode based. So 5.6.x might work but 5.8 is better.
