Re: [gtk-osx-users] These mailing lists will be closed.

Emmanuele,

Neil Gorman's email didn't even suggest that was an option. He published two lists: Mailing lists deemed worthy of migration to Discourse and those deemed unworthy. These were on the unworthy list.

I'm sure you know from lurking here for several years that the topic here is mostly the gtk-osx modulesets with occasional visits to gtk-mac-integration and gtk-mac-bundler. I've generally pushed anything involving Gtk itself to the appropriate place, though that hasn't come up in a long time. That won't change even though the venue does.

Meson is a nice build system, but not all projects are able to migrate to it; some teams might even like something else better. There are a lot of projects, even in Gnome Core, that have dependencies that don't build with meson, so subprojects aren't an option. jhbuild, for better or worse, remains the most flexible and easy to use build-from-source package manager.(Other contenders: paceman, BSD ports, and emerge; all are harder to use and have more overhead.)

Regards,
John Ralls

I wished you contacted the Discourse mods, or the rest of the GTK developers…

In any case:

- you can subscribe to that tag if you are only interested on GTK on macos

In general, if you want to ask questions about GTK, and GTK on macOS, then feel free to use Discourse.

I assume the gtk-osx-build discussion on GitHub will be useful for questions related to using jhbuild with the gtk-osx moduleset.

As a side note: GTK4 gets built and tested on macOS using Meson and subprojects—similarly to how we build GTK4 using MSVC on Windows. If you are targeting GTK4, or you're planning to, the GTK team recommends using the Meson build system, and adding GTK as a subproject.

Ciao,
 Emmanuele.

The Gnome foundation that hosts these mailing lists has decided that they are too low traffic to justify their continued existence or even to migrate to Gnome Discourse. Without specialization Discourse is way too noisy to be useful so I've enabled https://github.com/jralls/gtk-osx-build/discussions to replace these lists.
