      The curl group provides a Mac binary, in addition to sources.  However, in perusing

Not necessarily. You can download it separately and install it by hand where your build can find it, but if 
you want to make a fully automated build then you must indeed build from sources. jhbuild doesn't know how to 
install binaries, though it can check for them with the sysdeps module.
