Looking into issue, it appears that GTK built on OSX does not communicate with MacUIM or similar solution.

Are there any plans to improve this ? Does anyone know any bundled GTK app that works correctly in regards to input for asian languages ?

Not at the moment, but Gramps had a bug filed against OSX because the font fallback wasn't working with Chinese. (That just got added to Pango's CoreText backend in Master last week.) That implies that he was able to input Chinese characters somehow, and I imagine that he's using the Gtk immodule. Have you tried that?

Thanks for the pointer to the textinputclient patch. I'll try it out. If it doesn't work perfectly, it's at least a starting point.
