I get the feeling that that guess was wrong,

maybe it is

https://developer.gnome.org/gio/stable/glib-compile-schemas.html

Seems to make more sense, and

glib-compile-schemas .

generates a

gschemas.compiled

file. But existence of that file seems to make not really a difference.
