Filing such a broad bug report isn't likely to be that helpful.  The OP
was kind enough to provide some pseudo-benchmarking code.  Perhaps with
the help of the mailing list community the actual causes of the
slowdowns can be determined, and then bug reports filed on each of these
specific issues.  Surely there are folks on this list that know where
some inefficiencies are.  The OP was asking, "why is this slower?"  The
core glib stuff isn't dramatically altered from before.  What about the
drawing api?  Is client-side windowing and events responsible?
Something in Cairo?  Does this problem happen only on Linux?  What about
the Quartz or Win32 branches?
