mouse not working in canvas - please help

Hi,

after upgrading my Gentoo system to
xorg-server 1.5.1
gtk+ 2.4.13 (-r2 in Gentoo's notation)
xf86-input-mouse 1.3.0

my mouse cannot be used in the canvas of
gtk applications like Inkscape or Gimp.

It works in the menu part. I have looked at
'input-device', Mouse0 (as it is called here)
is enabled for Screen.

xinput test works just fine as well as non-gtk
applications.

In the input-devices (new) section of Inkscape
the buttons are working but moving the mouse
has no effect.

What am I missing, is there a sinmple test.
Is my combination of packages known to be broken?
