mmmm, as i understand, xlib is a graphic toolkit library for the x server, so it is not widely portable and depends on the xserver.
glib doesnt depends on xlib. GTK does like any other api.
xlibs apps. are very very ugly and mostly are hard to use and program.
i think that glib is adding portability to gtk and uniformity on functions names, etc.
