a blank desktop

Is there a way to tell gnome to NOT display the panel and the
Application/System panel at the top? That is, a blank desktop without
the panels on the top and bottom of the screen.

This is for a headless (no monitor, no keyboard) system that will run
a single program and I want to be able to use all of the screen
resolution for images.

Also, I would want to configure gnome to wake up or initialize in that
mode. How would I do that?

Thanks,

-Andres
