I understand that. The problem now is that the widget doesn't activate "expose" signals at all. The widget is a Socket plugged with MPlayer to display a video.

you can't. every time a widget gets an expose event from the underlying
window system, some or all of it is redrawn. this is a basic element of
GTK's design.
you will need to hook into the "expose" signal for the widget in
question, and redraw your text from the signal handler.
