Question about gtk_main_iteration blocking

I've a quick question. I've looked into the gtk+ api and came to the
sentence below:
gtk_main_iteration()
Runs a single iteration of the mainloop. If no events are waiting to be
processed GTK+ will block until the next event is noticed....
My question what will gtk+ block from happening? Thanks.
