No, I'm not kidding, and I believe that gtk (and not only) developers should have
written such a tool in the first place - to make life easier for end users, so
they won't have to learn exisitng obscure build environments in the first place.
The idea to build and intall everything in a separate directory is not uniquely
mine, see, for example, http://www.gobolinux.org/ ->

The next release of my tool will allow to specify a subset of described
targets on command line, e.g.
/ibm/home/sergei/AppsFromScratch/20061104/bin/build.pl -targets_to_build gcc4:gtk+ -make_like > &
! build.log &
I am also going to introduce dumping of dependency tree, so people will be
able to see what actually depends on whta, etc.
