PKG_CONFIG_PATH should at least have a value for pkg-config to be able to find ("also") your new glib installation... Beware modifying LD_LIBRARY_PATH "just like that". You might want to change it if you want to be sure you use your freshly-installed glib (provided you installed the latter in some non-standard location, i.e. using some other-than-standard --prefix while running ./configure
