GTK2 and SSH Perfromance issue

I am seeing an issue with GTK2 and SSH. When running GVIM compiled with GTK1 either over RSH or SSH, it performs fine. When running VIM compiled with GTK2 over RSH it is fine, but over SSH the performance is unacceptable. It appears that with the GTK2 libraries there is a significant increase in the amount of traffic across the network (X traffic most likely).

Has anyone else experienced this type of slowness?

If so, has anyone found a solution?

We have tried it with GDK_USE_XFT set to 0 and 1 with no difference. We have tried it with and without compression with no difference.

We want to continue to use the latest libraries and toolkits but with such a significant degredation in performance between the two libraries, it seems that anyone in need of performance gains would want to stay away from this latest version.
