This is what i get when i execute the series of
commands you gave:
station 3:~ # pkg-config --modversion
--variable=prefix gtk+-2.0
2.2.4
/opt/gnome
station 3:~ # PKG_CONFIG_DEBUG_SPEW=1
station 3:~ # pkg-config --modversion
--variable=prefix gtk+-2.0
2.2.4
/opt/gnome
station 3:~ # pkg-config 2>&1 | grep gtk+-2.0
station 3:~ #
station 3:~ #
station 3:~ #
But i downloaded and installed GTK 2.10
