I recall this problem on some older SuSE -- 9.2 could be --
but everything I remember about the solution is that some
library in the Gtk+ stack was too old or too new, or
otherwise mismatched with the rest, and it was solved by
upgrading or downgrading something.  Unfortunately I can't
recall which library needed to be upgraded or downgraded.
