Aagghhh, that infamous message ;-)
There could be several root causes that ultimately result in this
assertion failure. Unfortunately the true root causes of this message
are a bit hazy to me. Do you use the ms-windows theme engine ("wimp")?
One thing you could try to change the font used by Windows for its own
GUI (which the ms-windows theme engine then tells GTK+ to use, too) to
a TrueType font, like Arial. (Display Properties:Appearance:Advanced)
