Hi still not cracked this prob but have realised something:

The error occurs because 'glib-config' cannot be found

When I look prefix/bin I can see that the install of fontconfig and 
freetype created 'fontconfig-config' and 'freetype-config', so should
there also be a 'glib-config' there?

If so why does the making of glib not produce one

again any comments welcome 'cos I about to give up on this! :(
