Getting value from gtkadjustment

I am trying to assign a color value to an item,
through gtkadjustment. The min and max values are
0,256.

But I cannot get any numerical value from anywhere. 
I tried adj->value, but it does not give the value
that I require.

Could anyone suggest, how to get a numerical value of
the position of the adjustment, so that I could change
the color value when move the slider bar.
