I'm very very new to gtk+ so I'm probably wrong, but here's what I get from
your description:
You're connecting to the focus_out_event event. I think "events" are
generated by X and sent to applications and "signals" are generated by gtk+
and caught (if connected by a signal handler and not masked) by user code.
