Japanese text input in GTK

Sorry if this is a FAQ...

Can anyone direct me to Japanese text input support within GTK/GNOME (if it 
exists).  I'm a (beginner) student of the Japanese language (I know hiragana, 
katakana, and a few kanji) and a reasonably competent GTK programmer.  I'm 
also writing a user-friendly GPL'ed XML editor (www.conglomerate.org) and I'm 
trying to ensure we have proper i18n support for typing...
