libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference

This is what I get when gmaking pango 1.0.5

./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Stream_GetShort'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Stream_ExitFrame'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Stream_GetLong'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Stream_Seek'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Next_Char'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Stream_EnterFrame'
./.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_First_Char'

I understand these are defined in includes located in:
/usr/local/include/freetype2/freetype/internal/

Freetype 2 is of version 2.1.2


I also have Freetype that came with XFree 4.2.0 located in:
/usr/X11R6/include/freetype2/

Installed linux distro is Slackware 8.1. Kernel 2.1.19 and XFree 4.2.0 (patched 
to 4.2.1) compiled from source afterwards.


I have no idea what to do to correct the problem...
