I got the same error for a while.
In my notebook I did install XFree-4.1 (from package) and XFree-4.2
(from sources on /usr/local/X11R6). If this is your case, your
installation has 2 freetype-config scripts. You should set
/usr/local/X11R6 before than /usr/X11/bin, and then, compile again
pango et al.
Don't forget than FT_Get_First_Char is implemented on freetype,
not pango.
(I also have Debian sid + XFree-4.2).
