GtkTreeView - visual updating

I am removing some list store items, I want to freeze the 
visual update during removal. How can it be done in 
GtkTreeView ? 
GtkCList provides gtk_clist_freeze() and gtk_clist_thaw(). 
Can any one please tell me what call I can use to freeze 
the visual updates.
