character encoding, multithreading etc. in glib2

Hi,

AFAIK, glib2 uses utf-8 character encoded gchar* everywhere
internally.  Is that correct?

Next thing:  Is there any documentation available about which
functions are thread-safe/preemptable?  Which is the general policy of
glibc concerning thread-safety?
