The other exception is where your default visual is 24 bit, but you are trying to optimize for speed, and thus want to use a 8 or 16 bit visual. There was a review of XFree86 4.1.0, which showed this effect: http://www.thedukeofurl.org/reviews/misc/xfree86410/4.shtml Look at the XBench results for 16 and 32 bit.
