help installing GTK+

Hello all, I'm a Linux newbie, trying to install GTK+ 1.2.8 onto Redhat
Linux 5.2.  I first had to get the updated version of glib it required, no
problem.  Now the configure script gives the error:

*** X libraries or include files not found. Check 'config.log for

X appears to be installed and running, so I'm not exactly sure what else
is required.  The config.log gives more details, but I'm still not sure
what I need to do to make it happy.  Any help is appreciated.
