Hi,
If you do "xprop" on xterm or xclock that have been positioned in the
bottom left, you'll notice that they have a window gravity of
SouthEast set, whereas if you do -geometry +0+0 they have window
gravity of NorthWest. I'm guessing this holds the southeast corner of
the -0-0 xclock in a constant position when the window manager adds
its frame.
GDK doesn't pass through the set-gravity functionality, but your
question is a FAQ so probably it should, or at least a toggle for
whether the window is being positioned negatively.
If you file a bug in the bug tracker it will be less likely to get
forgotten en route to the next version of GTK. http://bugs.gnome.org
