GTK producing errors on 486

I've been having trouble with gtk on an old 486 lately:
Everything works fine, untill I click on a menubar in an app.
than the app crashes:

[/home/fvw] ethereal
Gdk-ERROR **: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
  serial 1012 error_code 3 request_code 38 minor_code 0
Gdk-ERROR **: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
  serial 1013 error_code 10 request_code 102 minor_code 0
[/home/fvw] gftp
Gdk-ERROR **: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
  serial 2907 error_code 3 request_code 38 minor_code 0
Gdk-ERROR **: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
  serial 2908 error_code 10 request_code 102 minor_code 0

I've recompiled gtk from source, as well as trying the standard redhat rpms.

Could this be related to some other fscked up library I'm using? Does anybody
have gtk 1.2.6 running properly on a 486? I'm using gcc version egcs-2.91.66
19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release).
