Not to spoil anybody's fun, but by far the easiest way of getting
1.2.6 working on Red Hat 6.1 (or 6.0) is to go to 

 ftp.gnome.org:/pub/GNOME/gnome-1.0.53/redhat/i386/

and grab the gtk+ RPM from Base/ and the gtk+-devel RPM from Devel/.
