(disclaimer: I can't speak for those who wrote the widget... take this
with a grain of salt)
I tried this on an app which I am working on, and it seems that not only
does it keep the letters which are typed, but these letters now act as
hotkeys just like on ordinary menus (Typing Alt-<letter> works too). Along
the same lines, this also works for ordinary menus -- you have to hold the
mouse button down to get this to work for them.
The part that seems to be causing confusion is that in an option menu, the
menu button faceplate itself is not redrawn to reflect the chosen state.
However, the menu does receive the "activate" signal. I noticed this only
because the activate signal for my optionmenu selectively desensitizes
various dialog elements based on the state of the menu. (UI gurus: Is this
a legitimate use of activate?)
