How to display an image?

Hey folks,

This is somewhat of a restatement of my previous post, but is more to
the point.  How can I open up an image(eg., jpeg, gif, bmp, xpm) and
place it in a box or window?

I tried following the pixmap/image example from the docs and it didn't
work for me, that's what my other post referred to.
