Tic marks?

Is there a way to set tic marks alongside a scale (or other) widget? 
Perhaps I should say, is there a relatively easy way?

I mean like:

1 - S
  - L
  - I
2 - D
  - E
  - R 
3 - H
  - E
  - R
4 - E
