Look at http://pobox.com/~hp/gnome-app-devel.html, second sample chapter,
it tells you about the members of the GdkEvent types. 

In this case I think you want the 'state' member:

 if ((event->state & GDK_SHIFT_MASK) != 0)
 {
   /* blah blah blah */
 }
