gtk-engines compilation

hello,
i'm having a bit of trouble compiling gtk-engines from cvs with
gtk and glib 1.1.12. the autogen.sh script gives me
configure.in:42: warning: AC_TRY_RUN called without default to allow cross compiling
loading cache ./config.cache
./configure: syntax error near unexpected token `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(gtk-engines,'
./configure: ./configure: line 524: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(gtk-engines, 0.1)'
i understand this information is a little vague, so if i can provide other,
please let me know so i can nail this one!
