Thread support in gtk 1.1.x

Hi,
I've noticed that the 1.1 series of gtk has some support for threads (at
least the configure script checks for a thread library and the ChangeLog 
also mentions thread support). So, is gtk/glib thread safe, or is there
just a wrapper around the native thread implementation ? If it's thread
safe, how do I use it ?
