gtk-xmhtml troubles

I'm having some problems with the gtk-xmhtml widget.
It seems to "lose colors" if I change the html source being displayed
several times.  I'm running gtk+-1.1.12 on an 8bit display.  After viewing
several different html files (with images) the colors for all other widgets
in the gtk-xmhtml application start to change (scrollbars, pulldown menus,
etc).  If I limit the maximum number image colors with
gtk_xmhtml_set_max_image_colors() the result still occurs, but it occurs
slowly.  
Has anyone else had similar problems?
(This isn't the only problem I've gotten out of gtk-xmhtml.. I've gotten
lots of segfaults/etc as well).
