You stated that your previous install was in /usr

and when you configure, make, make install it was in /usr/local

wouldn't ./configure --prefix=/usr/local put it back in /usr/local the
default?

wouldn't you use

./configure --prefix=/usr

to put it in the /usr the directory that the rpm dumps it?
