swallowing large applications

I have written tiny apps before that I swallowed into wharfs and the like.
 I didn't do anything special to make them swallowable.  However, it seems
difficult to me to swallow a large application that was not meant to be
swallowed.  For example, I would really like to swallow emacs and/or gvim
into a gtk application.  Can this be done?  How?
