You have to mess with the rcfiles.  Check out the section in the docs on
the rcfile format.  This was baffling me too - I was looking through all
the gtk source thinking, "How the he** do I change widget colors??", when
I stumbled upon that.  You'd think that this procedure would be documented
better.. it's not intuitive to me that I should have to use an .rc file to
change colors.
