installing gtk

I have problems installing gtk 1.0.6

I run the configure file and suddenly it stops when trying to check the X
libraries. I've tried several parameters to point to the right directories
but it does't work.

I've installed Redhat Linux 5.1 and X-Windows.

Could you please help me out ??
