The machine is ancient (a SparcStation 1), and so is SunOS and X11R4,
but it has loads of stuff on it that I can't move. Besides I enjoy
keeping the thing going as a matter of principle I guess.

While I'd like to upgrade the X server, I can't really go that route.
The sun-built R4 server also include display postscript, and several
useful apps rely on this. Probably the most useful of these is a
postscript previewer that does anti-aliasing, and is still (after all
these years) better than ghostscript.

I offered up multi-byte string encoding as a sacrifice to please the
gods, abandoned hope of using FontSets for the short term, and it hung
together enough to get the testgtk working (except for selections), and
build & run the Xchat app.

Unless anyone else is interested (which seems unlikely) I'll probably
just take a copy of the cvs tree and make my own branch off it so I
can keep it reasonably up to date as gtk develops.
