Check out copyright sites on Yahoo for more detailed info, but here's
a summary. When you write code, it's copyrighted. You don't have to
do a single thing. The US signed an international convention a while
back that automatically grants copyright status to any copyrightable
work you produce.
So, including a Copyright 1998 Alan Shutko message in this post is not
necessary.
If you register through the copyright office, however, you have a
greater ability to sue for damages. I'm fuzzy on the exact details,
but I know that you can sure without registering your copyright, but
that you're limited in what you can collect or some such.
