OK, I implemented your suggestion, but still get no colors.  Up to
today, I was using 0.99.3, and *was* getting colors, even though they
were wrong (as expected, given what you've said), but when I moved to
0.99.5, gtk_clist_set_background doesn't seem to do anything anymore.
