gtk version 1.0.4

I just downloaded and compiled gtk version 1.0.4. I had a terrible
time, the patch for 1.0.4 includes a config.cache file that I
had to delete before I could get a build to work on my system.
Is this a bug in the patch? Or have I got a configuration screwed up
on my machine somehow??
